Campers Learn and Teach About STEM at Frostburg State University’s F2T2 Camp

The Frostburg State University campus continues to buzz over the summer, but instead of college students, it buzzes with those attending numerous camps and conferences. One is the Future Frostburg Teachers Teaching (F2T2) day camp, now in its second year.

The hands-on summer camp is designed to engage students interested in both STEM subjects and teaching. F2T2 had 19 young people attending the day camp from Mount Savage, Braddock and Washington middle schools – an increase from six students in its inaugural year.

“This camp enrolls students who would otherwise not have the opportunity to explore these interests and apply them to questions faced by those who will travel to space and other planets,”医生说。. Boyce Williams, dean of the FSU College of Education. “F2T2 allowed students using the engineering design process to solve real-life problems.”

This year, campers were introduced to LEGO robotics. The FIRST LEGO League is an afterschool program available in many area schools in which teams compete by creating and coding robots to perform various tasks. 在F2T2, campers were tasked with executing just one of the tasks essential to this year’s FIRST LEGO League competition, held in December.

Another afternoon featured a scuba-diving lesson. Not only did campers learn the basics of scuba diving, but also explored the ways that astronauts train underwater to simulate space. Pairs of campers worked to find parts and assemble a structure while floating underwater.

Learning doesn’t end when camp ends, however. Using teaching tools and technology introduced to them at camp, students will become teachers when they teach a lesson to area school students during the coming school year.

F2T2 is a collaboration among the FSU College of Education, the Evergreen Heritage Center in Mount Savage, AmeriCorps and the Allegany County Public Schools.
